Bio Safety Cabinets

A Bio Safety Cabinet (BSC) is a specialized enclosed workspace used in laboratories to safely handle infectious or hazardous biological materials. It protects the user, the environment, and the samples from contamination using controlled airflow and high-efficiency filtration.

 What a Bio Safety Cabinet Does

 Types of Bio Safety Cabinets

Class I BSC

• Protects: User & environment
• Does NOT protect the sample
• Air is drawn inward and filtered before release
• Suitable for low–moderate risk agents

Class II BSC (Most Common)

Protects: User, environment & sample

Subtypes include:

• Class II A1 / A2
  • Recirculates some air inside cabinet
  • Used in microbiology labs, hospitals, research centers
• Class II B1 / B2
  • Exhausts air outside (no or minimal recirculation)
  • Suitable for work with toxic chemicals + biological agents

Class III BSC

• Highest level of protection (maximum containment)
• Fully enclosed, gas-tight system
• Operated using attached gloves
• Used in high-risk labs handling dangerous pathogens (e.g., BSL-4)
