Hydrocephalus Shunt - Low Pressure

Hydrocephalus Shunt - Low Pressure

(0 review)

 What “Low Pressure” Means

A low-pressure shunt valve is designed to open and drain fluid when the pressure inside the brain’s ventricles is relatively low. This helps prevent fluid buildup early, maintaining more stable intracranial pressure.

 How It Works

  • A catheter is placed in the brain’s ventricles.
  • The valve (low-pressure type) regulates CSF flow.
  • Fluid is diverted to another body cavity (usually the peritoneal cavity), where it is absorbed.

 Key Features

  • Opens at low intracranial pressure thresholds
  • Allows continuous or early drainage
  • Typically used in patients needing more aggressive fluid control

 Advantages

  • Helps prevent early fluid accumulation
  • Reduces risk of increased intracranial pressure
  • Suitable for certain infants or patients with poor CSF absorption

 Risks / Considerations

  • Over-drainage (can lead to headaches, subdural hematoma, or slit ventricle syndrome)
  • Requires careful patient selection and monitoring
  • May need adjustment or replacement over time

 Common Types of Shunts

  • Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt
  • Ventriculoatrial (VA) shunt
  • Lumboperitoneal shunt

 When It’s Used

Doctors may recommend a low-pressure shunt in:

  • Infants with hydrocephalus
  • Patients with low CSF resistance
  • Cases where rapid drainage is needed
