MAESIO HEALTH NEWS & ALERTS · 29 OCTOBER 2026
The purchase price is only the beginning.
A piece of equipment becomes part of someone’s care. The questions asked before buying it can matter long after the invoice is paid.

The news: a stronger focus on safe supply chains
In an update published on 21 October 2026, Kenya’s Pharmacy and Poisons Board outlined efforts to strengthen pharmaceutical regulation and protect patients. The statement followed the sixth PharmaReg and MedDevReg AfriSummit, opened in Nairobi on 28 September 2026.
PPB highlighted stronger inspections and quality systems, alongside work on product authentication, traceability and regulatory reliance. Its message connected regulatory capacity with access to quality health products and a more secure supply chain.

For healthcare buyers, the practical question is simple:
Can we establish what this product is, where it came from, and who will support it throughout its working life?
What this means when buying equipment
The following is Maesio’s practical purchasing guidance. It is not a new PPB directive or an announcement of new requirements for every device.
01 · Start with the clinical need
Describe the intended use, patient group and workload before comparing quotations. Two machines may look similar while offering different capabilities. Ask the clinical team to agree on essential specifications and involve a biomedical professional where appropriate.
02 · Make the product identifiable
Ask for the manufacturer, exact model, intended purpose and applicable regulatory documentation. Check that documents match the offered product. A familiar logo or a general certificate alone does not establish the status of a particular model in Kenya; confirm applicable requirements with PPB.
03 · Keep a clear supply trail
Retain the quotation, invoice, delivery note, serial number and supplier details. These records help a facility follow up on warranties, servicing and safety notices. For relevant consumables, also capture batch numbers, expiry dates and storage instructions.
04 · Plan beyond delivery day
Clarify installation, commissioning, user training, maintenance and the availability of spare parts. Where applicable, ask how calibration and performance checks will be arranged. Record responsibilities and costs in the purchase agreement.
05 · Compare the cost of ownership
A low initial price may come with expensive accessories, proprietary consumables or difficult repairs. Compare the expected costs of operation, maintenance and downtime alongside the purchase price. Ask what is included before approving the order.
Before you approve that quotation
| Ask your supplier | Keep on record |
|---|---|
| What exactly are we buying? | Manufacturer, model and agreed specifications |
| What documentation applies? | Product-specific documents and verification notes |
| Who installs and supports it? | Training, warranty and service arrangements |
| What will it cost to keep running? | Consumables, accessories and maintenance costs |
Safety continues after procurement
Keep an equipment register and make sure users know how to report faults. If a device appears unsafe, follow your facility’s procedures to prevent further use, preserve identifying details and involve the responsible clinical or biomedical team. Check official PPB safety communications and follow applicable reporting instructions.
