Hydroceohalus Shunt- Medium Pressure

Hydroceohalus Shunt- Medium Pressure

(0 review)

A medium-pressure shunt valve opens and allows CSF drainage when intracranial pressure reaches a moderate level—higher than low-pressure valves but lower than high-pressure ones. It provides a balanced drainage rate, making it the most commonly used option.

How It Works

  • A catheter is inserted into the brain’s ventricles.
  • The medium-pressure valve regulates CSF flow.
  • Fluid is redirected (usually to the peritoneal cavity) where it is absorbed safely.

 Key Features

  • Opens at moderate intracranial pressure thresholds
  • Ensures controlled and balanced CSF drainage
  • Suitable for a wide range of patients

 Advantages

  • Reduced risk of over-drainage compared to low-pressure shunts
  • Provides stable intracranial pressure control
  • Versatile and widely used in both pediatric and adult patients

 Risks / Considerations

  • May under-drain in patients needing more aggressive CSF removal
  • Requires monitoring for blockage or infection
  • Like all shunts, may need revision over time

 Common Applications

Medium-pressure shunts are often preferred for:

  • Standard cases of hydrocephalus
  • Patients requiring moderate CSF regulation
  • Situations where both over- and under-drainage risks must be balanced
