Hydrocephalus Shunt-High Pressure

Hydrocephalus Shunt-High Pressure

(0 review)

A high-pressure shunt valve is designed to open only when CSF pressure becomes significantly elevated. This minimizes unnecessary drainage and helps protect against over-drainage complications.

 How It Works

  • A catheter is placed in the brain’s ventricles.
  • The high-pressure valve remains closed at lower pressures.
  • When pressure exceeds the set threshold, the valve opens and diverts CSF (commonly to the abdomen via a VP shunt).
  • The fluid is then absorbed naturally by the body. Key Features
  • Opens at high intracranial pressure levels
  • Provides controlled, minimal drainage
  • Designed to prevent excessive CSF removal

 Advantages

  • Reduced risk of over-drainage (compared to low and medium pressure valves)
  • Helps prevent complications like subdural hematoma and slit ventricle syndrome
  • Ideal for patients sensitive to pressure changes

 Risks / Considerations

  • May lead to under-drainage if pressure does not reach the activation threshold
  • Requires careful patient assessment and follow-up
  • Like all shunts, carries risks of infection, blockage, or malfunction

 Common Applications

High-pressure shunts are often used in:

  • Patients prone to over-drainage complications
  • Cases where higher intracranial pressure must be maintained
  • Selected adult patients with stable CSF dynamics
